Cowey Centre set for R12m upgrade

Cowey Centre and its commercial office building in Durban's Morningside area is set for a R12m makeover. Growthpoint Properties, which owns the building, says the refurbishment is scheduled to start this month and will be undertaken amid trading, with measures in place to ensure minimal disruption for shoppers.

The project is expected to be completed within three months.

“This makeover will serve to create a modern, contemporary building with additional functionality to accommodate both tenant and shoppers' needs,” says Craig Davis of Growthpoint KwaZulu-Natal.

The four-storey Cowey Centre consists of 1500m² retail and 5500m² office space and has a diverse range of tenants, including prominent franchises, multinationals and smaller companies.

“The centre is well supported by Morningside residents and is an ideal convenience shopping venue,” Davis says.

The exterior of the building will undergo a significant change, in line with the chosen contemporary theme, which will also be reflected in the interior retail and office spaces.

Plans include upgrading the office foyer areas and other common areas utilised by office staff.

The retail area will also undergo an extensive upgrade, including tiling, revamped shopfronts, better landscaping, canopies and widening of the entrance ways and corridors.

To complement the design theme, part of the street-facing area will be timber-decked.

Davis says the upgrade will help to retain existing tenants and attract prospective businesses to the address.
