Retail trade sales decrease further

Retail trade sales at constant (2000) prices for May decreased year-on-year for the third consecutive month, recording a drop of 3.6% from a revised -0.1% in April (-0.3%), figures released today by Statistics South Africa show.

Retailers reported a decrease of 0.4% in sales at constant (2000) prices for the first five months of 2008 compared with the first five months of 2007, while growth for the same period in 2007 was 8.8%.

Retail trade sales at current prices, for the three months up to May 2008, increased by 11% compared with the three months up to May 2007. The increase for the corresponding period of 2007 was 15.4%.

Retail trade sales at current prices increased by 9.7% for May 2008 compared with May 2007.
