Looking for food you can bank on
The annual food directory Eat In, published by New Media, recognises the small, independent producers whose integrity, care for the environment, passion and innovation are putting South Africa on the international food map. The awards also acknowledge another vital part of the produce industry - the independent retailers and markets that source, stock and sell the products.
The directory's editor, Justine Drake, says, "Every year we are surprised and inspired when we scour the country to find breads, meats, marmalades and other products in the most unlikely places. The awards are all about celebrating and uplifting the little guys in our burgeoning South African food industry."
The nominations within the 16 categories (see the website for further information) are open to stores, producers, foodies, home industries, food technologists and farmers who are quietly refining the art of creating and innovating in the food industry. Last year's winners include NoMu, for their innovative Stir Dry Instant Pesto, Simply Salads for their trademarked Kumato®, a deliciously sweet tomato, and the Groenfontein Farm near Ceres.
"We are very excited to have been involved with this initiative since its inception and are thrilled at how the awards and produce industry have grown over the last three years," says Nici Beneke, head of RMB Private Bank Regions.
Anyone is welcome to nominate his or her favourite outlet or product.
For more information on the criteria and categories, visit http://www.eat-in.co.za and fill in the nomination form. You can also contact Nina Schiodt on 021 439 9255 or . The closing date for nominations is 2 June 2008.
The winners will be announced at an event held in September, where the 2009 edition of Eat In, South Africa's only comprehensive one-stop foodie directory, will be launched as well.
