SABC Education launches comics

The formal education unit at SABC Education has developed two comics that encourage learning and teach valuable life lessons in South Africa.

Three talented young artists were selected as part of SABC Education's Young Peoples development project and given the opportunity to learn how to develop educational comics. Brett Raseletso (22) from Soweto, Sechaba Paneng (20) from Matatiele and Richie Orphan (22) from Eldorado Park took their artistic talents and learnt from Umlando Wezithombe, the educational comic producers who recently launched the Madiba comic series.

Ingrid Bruynse, Formal Education Editor at SABC Education, says: "The first comic 'We Can Do It!' provides reading material to improve reading skills and teaches children about real life problems experienced by children their age and offers possible solutions in addressing these problems.

"The second comic 'Dream It, Be It' focuses on teenagers making positive decisions in life and includes activities for parents and teachers. Both comics provide contact details of useful organisations."

The comics have been distributed to eleven SABC radio stations; Motsweding FM, Lesedi FM, Ikwekwezi FM, Thobela FM, Phalaphala FM, RSG, Ligwalagwala, Umhlobo Wenene FM, SAFM, MLFM and Ukhozi FM who will distribute the comics to their audiences by means of a variety of initiatives.

Bruynse says: "If you feel your school or organisation could benefit by using these comics to improve the lives and minds of school children, please contact your nearest SABC radio station."
