Momodu currently also chairs Print and Digital Media South Africa (PDMSA). He described Momodu as having "a vast knowledge and experience in the media and communication industry both in government and private sector".

"President Zuma wishes Ms Momodu all the best in her new responsibility," a statement said.

The appointment comes during a new debate over whether the media should be regulated, and, according to SABC head Hlaudi Motsoeneng, whether journalists should be licensed.

The MDDA's mandate is to develop community and alternative media and plays a role in the "developmental and transformational agenda of South Africa as encapsulated in the National Development Plan", according to its website.

Its projects include supporting community radio and television stations, and community print publications.

The PDMSA represents the interests of newspaper and magazine publishers in the country and also issues the press cards the media have to present.

Her previous media work includes four years at the Government Communications and Information Services with a focus on transformation and diversity. Her job included providing strategic advice to ministers, the Cabinet spokesperson and other government executives on media relations and communication issues, according to GCIS.

She also led the team responsible for driving the government's communication agenda and reputation management. Besides previously having her own communications consultancy Progressive Consulting CC, her CV includes a position as Group Communications Regulatory and Strategic Human Resources director at Primedia, and strategic consultant for the SABC.

Her qualifications include an LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Hertfordshire, a Management Advancement Programme Certificate from Wits Business School and a Radio Management Certificate.
