NSPCA slams Fear Factor

The complaint objects to Fear Factor in general terms and cites one episode in particular which featured rats being released into a coffin-size perspex box in which the contestant had to lie. The basis of the complaint covers alleged "wanton and irresponsible use of animals", exclusion of animal welfare, alleged violation of the Performing Animals Protection Act and alleged potential violation of the Animals Protection Act.

"The NSPCA believes that (animal) welfare involvement may not be mandatory but its exclusion indicates an attitude especially as the programme is shown at peak viewing time when children could be watching," says NSPCA spokesperson Christine Kuch. "It is the message being put across, the perception created that animals are disposable items or can be used for fun. Fear Factor does nothing to encourage humane values."
