In April this year, Shepherd posted on Facebook that tumours had spread extensively to his stomach and that a further enlarged tumour was on his oesophagus.

He posted an update earlier this month, announcing his decision not to continue with further treatment, to improve his quality of life and spend quality time with his loved ones, in the short time he had remaining.

Giles co-founded Brand Alive Group in 2001, a leading international brand development consultancy, specialising in the analysis, strategic establishment and creative and tactical expression of brands.

During his career, spanning over 30 years, Giles managed and directed creative work for major brands. A trained journalist, Giles landed his first job as an assistant editor in 1987 and worked his way through all facets of the publishing, marketing, advertising, promotional and ultimately professional brand development spheres.

Most of his colleagues and family will remember Giles as an eloquent speaker, and a man who lived a passionate life, with a glass of gin in hand. He believed in changing the world by offering random acts of kindness, one day at a time.

So Gabby Cowling, Shepherd's sister, requested in May that friends and family around the world pour themselves a large gin and tonic and raise it in support of her brother:

Our brave, beloved and amazing Giles Shepherd passed away shortly before 12 today surrounded by the family that love him - we are truly heartbroken. Thank you for all your love and support - today have that #ginforgiles you all know that’s what he would want - would appreciate if everyone can give the family a little time - all details will follow.
Family and friends have been sharing their sadness over Giles' passing on social media. His memorial service will be held on Friday, 5 July at 11am at St John’s College, St David Rd, Houghton Estate in Johannesburg. All are welcome to pay their last respects to a life well lived.
