NEWSWATCH: In the Supreme Court of Appeal yesterday, 20 June 2012, British American Tobacco lost its appeal against the banning of cigarette advertisements, reports Times Live.

  • Times Live: Thumbs up for smoke ads ban... The Department of Health's complete ban on cigarette advertising got the OK from the court. It remains to be seen, however, what impact - if any - the ban will have on the number of people who smoke. There are also the issues of employment (or unemployment) levels in the advertising and marketing sectors and so on.

    Some people might wonder what other areas are in the firing line? Cars - because people drive like morons, prang and kill themselves? Extreme sports - because they're inherently risky?

    Yes, there are people who have to be "saved from themselves" but the vast majority of people in this country are sensible and can actually think for themselves. Moreover, that's exactly what they want to be allowed to do.

    A number of people have voiced concerns that SA is being turned into a nanny state. Here's hoping they are wrong, but...
