ASA: ad alert against Tshwane Metro Council still stands

While the Tshwane Metro Council has now settled legal costs to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa in terms of a high court order the ASA won against the metro during February 2010, the initial dispute has not yet been resolved and the ASA ad alert, dated 19 April 2007, still stands, says the ASA's Corné Koch.

The Tshwane Metro Council legally challenged the ASA when it took the body to judicial review in 2006. The challenge arose from a ruling where the ASA held that the statement "City of Tshwane, Africa's leading capital city" is misleading, as the "City of Tshwane" is not a city but a demarcated municipal area.

The metro council did not comply with the ASA ruling, as well as any of its subsequent rulings, and as a result, an ad alert was issued to all ASA media members to not to accept any advertising from the metro council concerning its general destination-marketing activities.
