Three SA nominees among 2006 D&AD Pencil finalists
South Africa's representation in the D&AD Global Awards has increased dramatically since last year - three Pencil nominations and 16 'In Book' entries this year, compared to 10 'In Book' and no Pencil nominations in 2005. Winners of Yellow Pencils, or the even more rare Black Pencil, will be announced at the D&AD Global Awards Ceremony & Dinner on 24 May 2006.
A 'Yellow Pencil', the equivalent of a Silver Award, is a piece of work or campaign that is a true marker for creative excellence, while the 'Black Pencil', the Gold Award, is for a piece of work or campaign that is truly ground-breaking - the kind of work that can redefine a medium. 'In Book' is for work that is included in The D&AD Annual 2006 as a record of the best work of the year; this work has not won an award, but deserves recognition.
"A record amount of work from a record number of countries was entered into the D&AD Global Awards this year," says D&AD chief executive Michael Hockney. "The quality of nominations is due to the dedication and hard work of D&AD Judges, who ensure that our high standards are maintained."
This year, 745 entries will be included in The D&AD Annual 2006, of which 142 have been nominated for a D&AD award.
All in all, categories with a significant number of nominations include: Television & Cinema Crafts (20 nominations), Television & Cinema Advertising (11), Digital Crafts (10), Art Direction (nine), and Online (eight). Some judges were privileged to set the standard by nominating the first ever award recipients in new categories such as Gaming (four nominations), Magazine & Newspaper Design (six) and Direct (seven).
