    Journalist escapes assassination attempt

    MOGADISHU, SOMALIA: The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the latest assassination attempt on the life of Muhaydin Hassan Mohammed, publicly known Husni, the head of news of Shabelle Media Network.

    Two unidentified armed men opened fire at Mohammed at around 6.30pm local time on Sunday evening, 25 March 2012, but luckily he escaped with minor injury on his way to his house in Mogadishu's Wadajir district. He got minor bullet wound at the left side of his chest.

    "We are alarmed by this attempt on Muhaydin Hassan Mohammed's life," said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ secretary general. "We call on the authorities to provide protection to Muhaydin Hassan Mohammed and ensure this attack is thoroughly investigated."

    Three journalists were so far murdered in Somalia since start of 2012, including the director of Shabelle Media Network, Hassan Osman Abdi who was shot dead on 28 January 2012 in Mogadishu.
