Twyg award-winner Klein Muis explores Coloured identity in debut collection

For Walter Sisulu, a university that has played a vital role in expanding access to higher education and professional opportunities in the Eastern Cape, the endorsement represents a transformative achievement. As a developing institution with a strong commitment to academic excellence and social impact, Walter Sisulu has continued to strengthen its offering. Having offered a Saica-endorsed Bachelor of Accounting Sciences degree since 2013, the university can now provide students with a complete academic pathway from undergraduate studies through to postgraduate diploma level within a single institution.
This endorsement enables aspiring chartered accountants to complete both their undergraduate and postgraduate accounting studies at Walter Sisulu while remaining in the Eastern Cape. By reducing barriers to access and minimising the need for students to leave the province to further their studies, it brings a recognised pathway to the chartered accountant designation closer to the communities the university serves.

Prior to the endorsement, students wishing to pursue postgraduate accounting studies often had to leave the province to access opportunities elsewhere. These included institutions such as the University of Cape Town, which provided an important pathway for qualifying students to complete their postgraduate studies.
While partnerships such as these played a valuable role in supporting student success, students can now pursue both their undergraduate and postgraduate accounting studies at Walter Sisulu.
Speaking at the celebration, vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Thandi Mgwebi, described the endorsement as a defining moment for the institution and the communities it serves.

"For the first time in our recent history, students can begin their Accounting Sciences studies at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, complete their Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting here in Mthatha and remain on course towards the chartered accountant designation without having to leave the province. This milestone demonstrates that excellence and transformation can go hand in hand and confirms our commitment to creating opportunities for future generations."
Professor Mgwebi noted that the endorsement is the culmination of years of dedication by staff, students and stakeholders committed to strengthening accounting education and professional development in the region.
Echoing this sentiment, South African Institute of Chartered Accountants chief executive officer, Patricia Stock, said the achievement represents far more than the approval of an academic programme.
"Today we celebrate more than an endorsement. We celebrate opportunities. Talent is distributed across every community in South Africa, but access to opportunity is not always equally available. This milestone opens doors for aspiring chartered accountants in the Eastern Cape and strengthens our collective commitment to building a profession that is representative, inclusive and accessible."
Stock added that the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants remains committed to supporting institutions that contribute meaningfully to developing future chartered accountants while maintaining the highest standards of quality and excellence.
Building on the significance of the endorsement, Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority chief executive officer, Ayanda Mafuleka, reflected on the far-reaching impact the endorsement will have on students and their families.
"We may never know every student who walks through the gates of this university. We may never know every learner who will walk through the doors opened by this endorsement, nor every family whose story will be changed because of it. That is the beauty of this moment. The true impact of today's achievement will be measured in the opportunities, careers and futures that will emerge from it. Congratulations to iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu on this remarkable milestone."
The celebration brought together leaders from academia, business, the accounting profession and the public sector, reflecting the collective effort that made the endorsement possible. Among those in attendance were iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu Chancellor Dr Nonkululeko Gobodo, former South African Institute of Chartered Accountants chief executive officer Ignatius Sehoole, Standard Bank's Thembeka Maseko, and numerous academic and industry stakeholders committed to advancing transformation and expanding access to the chartered accountant pathway.
The programme was facilitated by the Saica head of corporate affairs and stakeholder engagement, Nqaba Mabece, while the Saica head of Thuthuka, Gugu Makhanya, reflected on the journey towards endorsement and the significance of the achievement for future generations of accounting professionals.
The event also celebrated students who will be among the first beneficiaries of the University's Saica - endorsed Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting programme, marking a new chapter in Walter Sisulu's contribution to the accounting profession.
During the programme, Walter Sisulu director of Institutional Advancement, Sitembele James, delivered what he called a "friendraising" message that highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships between academia, industry and the profession in expanding opportunities for future chartered accountants and supporting the University's continued growth.

Closing the programme, Head of the Department of Accounting Sciences, Senzo Ndlangamandla, thanked stakeholders for their support and reminded students of the responsibility that comes with entering the profession.
"This is the University's first offering of the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting programme, and we are appreciative of the trust that students place in the work we do. As chartered accountants, we are entrusted with the future, and some of that future is in this room today. As you prepare to enter the workplace, be responsible, ethical leaders who serve society with integrity and purpose."
Beyond the endorsement itself, the celebration served as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration between universities, professional bodies, industry partners and funding organisations. The endorsement reflects SAICA's ongoing commitment to transformation, increasing access to quality accounting education and creating sustainable pathways into the profession for future generations of chartered accountants.
And it was never going to be a complete Eastern Cape celebration without noise, music and lots of meat, which Walter Sisulu made sure to provide in abundance. May the joy of the occasion translate into the kind of environment and culture that will form the bedrock of the excellence yet to be unleashed through this endorsement.
