The initiative forms part of Sentech’s Socio-Economic Development (SED) Programme, which supports community development through initiatives that improve access to technology, connectivity and opportunities for digital inclusion.

The new computer laboratory is equipped with 40 tablets, 10 computers, 40 headsets, tablet covers, desks, chairs, a storage trolley and air conditioning. The classroom was also refurbished to accommodate the facility. In addition, the school will benefit from three years of VSAT internet connectivity to support access to online educational resources.

The handover ceremony was attended by the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, alongside the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Yusuf Cassim, representatives from Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, Sentech, and the school community. During the visit, the minister engaged with learners as they demonstrated how the new equipment can be used to support their learning.

The minister commended the facility, describing the computer laboratory as a world-class learning environment that will give learners access to technology and digital resources to support their education. The facility represents an important step towards creating opportunities for learners to develop digital skills and prepare for a future in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Speaking at the event, Sentech CEO, Tebogo Leshope, said the initiative reflects the importance of connecting digital infrastructure to practical opportunities for communities.

“Connectivity must translate into opportunities that people can use in their everyday lives. At Soutpan Primary School, we are helping bring digital tools and internet access into the learning environment, giving learners and educators additional resources to support teaching and learning. We want to see connectivity contribute to digital skills development and help prepare young people to participate in an increasingly digital society,” said Leshope.

The project highlights the role of digital infrastructure in supporting education and widening access to online information and learning resources. While access to devices and connectivity is an important step, the effective use of these resources by educators and learners will be key to realising their full value.

Through its SED Programme, Sentech continues to support initiatives that respond to community needs and contribute to broader efforts to advance digital inclusion. The project also demonstrates the value of collaboration between public institutions in extending the benefits of technology to communities.

Sentech’s purpose is universal connectivity for digital inclusion. Through its infrastructure and community-focused initiatives, the organisation continues to contribute to a more connected society in which people have greater opportunities to access information, develop skills and participate in the digital world.
