Launch of Press Freedom Commission in SA On Thursday, 7 July 2011, SANEF and PMSA launched the Press Freedom Commission in Johannesburg. That same afternoon, the closure of Rupert Murdoch's 168-year-old British Sunday tabloid News of the World, was also announced, supposedly thanks to the ever-increasing ramifications of the phone-hacking scandal and advertisers pulling ads. Apart from the unending puns, what could both of these mean for media freedom and self-regulation in South Africa? Read today's stories by Herman Manson and Issa Sikiti da Silva. On the advertising side, last week Chris Moerdyk revealed the results of a preliminary impact assessment on the proposed ban on alcohol advertising in SA - very scary reading. If you're interested in the state of global advertising, read Manson's interview with the globetrotting American Brianna Graves who, through her Saturn Return Project, is establishing an informal global network of ad execs sharing insights into global best practice and their local markets by travelling to and documenting six top ad agencies in six countries. South Africa and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris was her very first stop. Don't forget to listen to the latest Biz Takeouts podcast from the Bizcommunity.com/Chai FM Media & Marketing radio show! Keep warm! Simone Puterman ( @SimoneBiz) Managing editorPS The latest Ornico Ad Showcase features TV ads for Lindt, Clover Super M, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, KFC and Shower to Shower, and radio ads for Sanlam, Kia, LipIce, Visa and Aquelle. Special focus on media freedom
[Herman Manson: @marklives] In the wake of the massive phone-hacking scandal playing out in Britain, its prime minister, David Cameron, has called for the scrapping of media self-regulation and for stronger press regulation by government. And, locally, the African National Congress (ANC) is bound to point to events in London as further proof that the press need to be taken in hand so that what they publish be regulated further. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] A new star, the Press Freedom Commission (PFC), has appeared in the emotionally charged galaxy of the South African print media, where ethics are sometimes flouted in the name of freedom of expression and critical journalists are held at gunpoint by a ruling party that believes that self-regulation is 'toothless' and not working. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] Can South Africa's newsrooms, its regulation watchdog the Press Council of South Africa and its brand new Press Freedom Commission (PFC) learn some valuable lessons from British Sunday tabloid News of the World's 'shameful' end of the road amid allegations of phone hacking? The South African National Editors' Forum ( SANEF) has requested a meeting with the minister of police, Nathi Mthethwa, to discuss with him, in his capacity as head of the Cabinet security cluster, and members of the cluster, the matter of death threats and other intimidatory moves against two Sunday Times' journalists, Mzilikazi Wa Afrika and Stephan Hofstatter. [Herman Manson: @marklives] Brianna Graves has set out to discover the true state of global advertising by packing her bags, taking her savings, and getting on a plane. Travelling to six top ad agencies in six countries, including so far South Africa and Canada, Graves is documenting her experiences online at The Saturn Return Project. Bizcommunity caught up with her during the final couple of days of her stay in Canada. [video] Read more >>
[Angela Adamson] It's rare to see the words 'future' and 'print' in the same sentence when considering advertising's prospects. [Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] As that dumb bird, the ex-beauty queen, prattled on vacuously on Saturday, 2 July 2011, on SABC's Monaco-wedding special, I turned to Twitter. When 140-character missives become the most compelling content you can get on a live event, it not only says a lot about the SABC's total cluelessness but also tells us how fast our media habits are changing - and how easily we take to new technologies. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] Crisis-hit and cash-strapped SABC wants to get rid of all employees who are over 55 years of age by offering them early retirement packages as part of its much-publicised turnaround strategy, a reliable source told Bizcommunity.com on Monday, 4 July 2011. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] The SABC intends to lay off between 700 and 800 employees over a two-year period, according to a letter sent recently to the unions. A copy of the letter, now in possession of Bizcommunity.com, states about 500-600 employees will need to be reduced during the financial year 2011-2012, and the balance during the financial year 2012-2013. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] If the SABC board had renewed Robin Nicholson's contract as acting CEO, it would have been called to Parliament to explain why it did that, chairperson of the parliamentary committee on communications Eric Kholwane (ANC MP) said on Wednesday, 6 July 2011, speaking at the SOS Coalition meeting hosted in Johannesburg to discuss the latest SABC flare-ups. NEWSWATCH: And it's back... Making the news instead of reporting it, that is - the SABC. First off, a couple of unions reckon that whoever is right for the job of GCEO, Phil Molefe ain't it, reports IOL, which also reports our national broadcaster has fumbled the ball over the Rugby World Cup coverage. Still on the SABC, axed acting GCEO Rob Nicholson might have his head on the block, if claims by former SABC exec Phumelele Ntombela-Nzimande are correct, reports The New Age. Finally, on the alcohol ad ban front, Chris Moerdyk has some figures that might give sleepless nights at the SABC, reports IOL. Read more >>
Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) is deeply concerned by the ongoing governance crises at the SABC, where the latest events see it making the news for all the wrong reasons. The ANC and the Minister of Communications have been accused of politically interfering in the process of appointing the new GCEO, which the MMA believes should be made by the SABC board alone. [Herman Manson: @marklives] Have you ever seen a Parrot AR.Drone? Alan Knott-Craig Jnr has one and he is happy to show it off, having it lift off as soon as we step into the still-deserted offices (one of three in Stellenbosch) of World of Avatar, his new mobile and media business venture. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] A recent study conducted by Draftfcb Johannesburg has found that South African black women in the townships (22-37 years of age, LSM 5-7) have a strong focus on their careers, kids and social media, thus leaving no or little space for men who are just a 'nice-to-have'.
