Special focus on media freedom
[Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] Newspaper columnists in South Africa have been allowed a wide degree of latitude, a mentality inherited from the age-old British convention that has elevated them to the status of 'gods', Lesley Cowling, senior lecturer at Wits University's School of Journalism, told a media forum last week in Johannesburg, as the debate about the 'shocking' columns of David Bullard, Kuli Roberts and Jon Qwelane resurfaces in the media corridors. [Issa Sikiti da Silva: @sikitimedia] The controversial Sunday Times Review Panel's full report - withheld and hidden from the public view for a long time but brought to light by freelance journalist Michelle Solomon and finally published this week by Business Day - has been met with mixed reactions from media analysts and politicians. [Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] As much as the South African government might feel the need to introduce information bills and media tribunals to keep the media at bay and in check, it will be a losing battle. While many governments have, in the past, been able to almost muzzle their media and come close to proving that the sword is, in fact, mightier than the pen, they will find that the digital pen is now winning the battle hands down. [Dr Nikolaus Eberl] One year on - and not a single South African newspaper considered the 2010 FIFA World Cup Anniversary worth mentioning on the front cover (apart from a tiny Zakumi gracing the City Press banner). Equally disinterested was the national broadcaster, which did not even devote a single show to remembering what once had been billed "South Africa's greatest moment in history" - and even 702 pulled its World Cup Special in favour of a discussion on how holiday homes can be rented at a discount in low season.
