A picture too far

The tragic death of Andries Tatane during a protest in Ficksburg last week has rightly ignited anger and condemnation across South Africa, but the fact that some media have published the image of Tatane dying has also been condemned by Media Monitoring Africa for one. So, while much anger has, naturally, been directed at the police, with a campaign on Facebook attracting a large number of comments, there are many who feel that while the media's role is to report the news to the public, there are times when it has to tread a great deal more carefully.

On a different front, now that we have become another BRIC in the Wall, Angelo Coppola has some comments on the weakest link. As he asks: "If we (South Africa) didn't cut it as part of other brands, such as the AU or SADC, why should it be any different with BRIC?" Why indeed?

Meanwhile, the Media24 board gave Esmaré Weideman a bit of a surprise when it appointed her Media24 group CEO, to take over from Francois Groepe.

To our readers we say enjoy the Easter break - and drive carefully.

Vodacom name will stay for at least another five years
[Herman Manson: @marklives] Discussions on rebranding Vodacom have been happening since Vodafone announced it would take a majority share in late 2008, in line with its global practice for majority shareholdings to trade under its corporate branding.
