Release of controversial doccie postponed
The release of 'Fahrenheit 9/11' in South Africa, by Videovision Entertainment has been postponed in order to secure better cinema venues for screening and roll out the promotional machine effectively.
Following on discussions with Harvey Weinstein's Fellowship Adventure Group, it was decided to postpone the release of the film in South Africa, it was announced by Sanjeev Singh, Videovision's head of acquisition and distribution, yesterday.
"We believe that Fahrenheit 9/11 is one of the most controversial and most powerful documentaries ever made, especially because of director Michael Moore's brazen criticism of US President, George W. Bush and America's war on Iraq. The film will undoubtedly be a box office winner in South Africa and in order to achieve this, we need to make sure that the film gets adequate trailering, the best date and the best cinemas," Singh said.
Fahrenheit 9/11 had the best ever opening weekend for a documentary feature in the United Kingdom, grossing more than R14.5 million. Its nearest rival is Moore's earlier documentary, Bowling for Columbine, which took R1.7 million in the equivalent period.
