M&G launches Book of South African Women

After seven years, as a little black book of some of South Africa's leading women, the publication focused this year on women who are changing South Africa one community, one workplace, and one family at a time. These women are said to have the initiative, drive and passion to make the country to a better place, laying the foundation for a better South Africa.

"They weren't hard to find. They were right there, in our offices, our communities, our cities, our rural areas. They were running crèches, big and small businesses and health centres. They were creating art, performing theatre, educating themselves and uplifting those around them," says Tanya Pampalone, executive editor of the book.

Public nominations

Drawing on nominations from the public and an all-female editorial team, the publication compiled a list of some of the most inspiring women in the country: raw, unplugged and beautiful in all their glory.

Award winning portrait photographer, Sally Shorkend travelled around the country to meet and photograph the women featured in the book. Her images capture the spirit and drive of these harbingers of change.
