Two individuals who have devoted their time and energy in furthering the interests of the newspaper industry and print media over a number of years were honoured at the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards ceremony last night.
The annual Print Media SA Fellowship Awards is regarded as the industry's most prestigious award in recognising key-decision makers. The fellows are identified through nominations from industry's stakeholders.
For the first time Print Media Fellows will be announced separately; with key personalities in the newspaper and magazine industries being honoured at the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards and Mondi Magazine Awards respectively. The magazine awards will take place on 18 May 2005.
The 2005 Print Media NEWSPAPER Fellows are:
Nazeem Howa
He has served the media industry extensively in his roles as a journalist, journalism trainer, trade unionist, was part of the media team managing Nelson Mandela's release from prison, and now he is one of the top managers at Independent Newspapers from where he continues to serve the media industry. Howa serves on the boards of the SA Press Association, Allied Publishing and the Audit Bureau of Circulations. He has given his time to the Print Media SA on various committees and as chairman of the Media Freedom Committee.
Tony Howard
For his role in the industry over the past three decades. He has played an active role since 1993 as a Director at SAPA. He has made major contributions as a Director on Print Media SA and Newspaper Association of South Africa Boards and has played a key role in the negotiations with government in the establishing of the Media Development and Diversity Agency, and in cementing the industry's approach to newsprint consumption.
