Be a good citizen - clean up the city

The Citizen newspaper and its partners Garbie Refuse Bags and Pikitup today, 11 November 2009, have launched the CitiClean campaign, which aims to clean up city intersections. The campaign will tackle one intersection a week in a campaign to raise awareness of litter and to encourage the public to keep the streets and public places clean.

To add to the impact, The Citizen will be giving away a free Garbie refuse bag with every copy of its newspaper bought from its kerbside vendors.

The newspaper's editor Martin Williams hailed CitiClean as an opportunity for the public to get involved in creating a litter-free Johannesburg ahead of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and beyond.

"We're certain all of us want Johannesburg to look good, not only for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who will visit us next year but also as citizens of this great city. Let's each do our bit. Pitch in to keep Joburg clean," said Williams.

“CitiClean is an exciting campaign that will take a proactive approach to putting an end to litter - as well as providing much-needed job opportunities and income for the unemployed people who will be on the clean-up teams,” commented publisher, Greg Stewart

“We're hoping that this initiative will encourage all businesses and the public to do their part in improving our environment, so that in time we may become a ‘clean conscious' society,” he concluded.
