Afro Café opens in Cape Town
The originators of Afro magazine, Daddy buy me a pony, have teamed up with international model and businessman Grant Rushmere to assist in creating the Afro Café in Church Street in Cape Town.
Products like Afro coffee and Afro tea will be on sale at the specialty café and coffee shop. The same concept will be rolled out in Europe, focusing mainly on German-speaking areas. The roll-out is planned for December 2005 in Salzburg, to coincide with the launch of the Afro II magazine in South Africa.
Peet Pienaar, creative director of Daddy buy me a pony, the creative unit of the 9November Union of companies, says they publish Afro to help shed the negative image of Africa because the continent is all too often only associated with war, famine, Aids and other ailments.
Afro I won a Gold Clio Award in Miami and a Gold Award at The One Show Awards in New York. Afro II, sponsored by Spier Estate, will be available in December this year.
