What's in a name, court battle

Stadium Management South Africa released a statement yesterday, Thursday, 28 July, concerning the name change tug-of-war between itself and FNB, which is now going to the South Gauteng High Court on 3 August 2010. In the meantime, Soccer City will be used to refer to the stadium.

The statement in full:

"............ In terms of a management agreement concluded between National Stadium (Pty) Ltd and the City of Johannesburg, National Stadium was appointed as the manager of the newly constructed Soccer City Stadium in terms of which National Stadium was granted the naming rights to Soccer City.

............ On 14 July 2010, FirstRand Bank Limited launched an urgent application out of the South Gauteng High Court requesting an order declaring that the Soccer City Stadium be referred to only as "First National Bank Stadium" or "FNB Stadium". The City of Johannesburg has intervened in the matter.

............ The matter has been set down to be heard on the 3rd of August 2010, by the South Gauteng High Court.

In the interim, we intend to use the name "Soccer City", when referring to the stadium."
