Decision on tavern applications put on hold for now

Nelson Mandela Bay's city housing and land earlier this week agreed to postpone a decision on all applications for the establishment of taverns until the next meeting of the Liquor Board.

Speaking during the debate on one application, ANC councillor Jimmy Tutu said the fact that some taverns had been in existence for 20 or 30 years and were the sole income for some families had to be taken into account.

He believed the Liquor Board ought to make a presentation on the issue so that “we can take an informed decision”.

A decision on applications for the renewal of encroachments - the use of municipal land abutting a person's property - was also deferred after the ANC queried the value put on the land.

The committee agreed, following a proposal from the DA's Andrew Gibbon, that a full report would be presented at the next meeting.
