Two of them, Le Quartier Francais, in Franschhoek, and La Colombe, in Constantia, made it into the top 40 of the annual S.Pellegrino list of the world's best restaurants, at 36th and 38th respectively.

Le Quartier's executive chef, Margot Jansen, said of the honour: “It's an incredible feeling, totally unreal.”

Jansen said she hoped that the awards would market South Africa as a culinary, as well as a tourist, destination.

“The world is beginning to see what great dining they can experience in South Africa. The great showing by South African restaurants is an incredible achievement for South African cuisine,” she said.

Also cracking the top 100 were Jardines (79th) and Aubergine (96th), both in Cape Town. Rust en Vrede, in Stellenbosch, was in 98th position.

El Bulli, in Catalonia, Spain, was voted the best restaurant in the world for the fourth time.

The Fat Duck, in Berkshire, England, took second spot and Noma, in Copenhagen, Denmark, rounded off the top three.
