Furniture and decor retailer Block and Chisel has opened a "coffee and toastie emporium" at its store in Diep River, Cape Town.

The Block Cafe, as it's called, was designed by Block and Chisel directors Paul McAdam and Susan McCoubrey, while Chef Courtney Ah-Sing is responsible for the creating and executing a simple menu, including toasties made with fresh sourdough and cheddar, and quality fairtrade coffee sourced from Africa. Light breakfasts, cakes and snacks are also served throughout the day.

“The cafe is all about relaxed enjoyment - it’s meant to be the sort of place you can spend time catching up with friends and really feel like you are at home,” says Susan McCoubrey.

A beautiful oak bar, where guests are encouraged to place their orders, was designed specifically for the space and constructed by the Block and Chisel workshop team in Philippi. The dining area itself is a mixture of classic and modern styles, and with all the items available for purchase, customers can try before they buy.

“We’re really proud of how the cafe has turned out, and hope that our customers get to enjoy spending time there as much as we have loved creating it,” says managing director Paul McAdam.
