VOIP, data rates drop

Switch Telecom has announced a double-digit rates reduction in its VOIP rates of 20% as an average call rate reduction; and Cell C has introduced several new promotional rates for its contract data offerings.

Switch Telecom has implemented the majority of its cuts where they really matter. "National fixed and mobile destinations have been targeted for call reductions because that's where people are actually calling. We don't subscribe to the thinking that a 50% reduction in call rates to Kazakhstan, coupled with a 10% reduction in call rates to your mom in the next suburb, means that your operator has cut rates by an average of 30%," says Shannon Duffin, the company's operations director.

Its new rates came into effect on 1 April 2013 for national and mobile calls and on 15 April 2013 for international calls. The new rates are transparently presented on its website (www.switchtelecom.co.za).

Contract subscribers can now purchase Cell C's 500 MB per month offering for R39 per month. The 1GB per month offering will now cost R69 per month, which is an effective rate of 7c per MB. For top end contract customers, the new price for the 10GB monthly package will be R499 per month and 20GB R999 per month. It will continue to offer its Giga promotional packages.

The new promotional offers will be effective from Tuesday 9 April and will run until 30 June 2013.
