rAge an opportunity to explore careers in gaming
Artists’ Alley and cosplay
The Artists’ Alley is where local independent artists get to shine and show off their work. From Cape Town’s hottest new anime and comic artists to old favourites, Artists’ Alley is the creative hot spot where rAgers can meet their favourite illustrators and buy some local artwork.
rAge is also a great opportunity for cosplayers to dress up as their favourite fantasy characters, and most of them are happy to engage with the visitors and have their photos taken.
home_coded
home_coded was started by NAG in November 2012 to help showcase the very best in local game development talent and promote growth in the industry. Visitors can meet and talk to local developers, play their latest games – even the ones still in development – and find out why being a game dev in South Africa is the coolest job around. rAge provides floor space for home_coded at no cost, and has also secured stand construction and basic facilities like lighting and electricity at minimal cost, giving local game devs creative freedom to drive this industry into the future.
NAG Jam
Imagine creating a kick-ass game in 72 hours… and then seeing it come to life. That’s NAG Jam. Participants are invited to create a semi-functional game around a specific theme within a tight time limit, just weeks before rAge, and the best games submitted are selected to be put on display at the NAG Jam/Intel stand. Those interested in participating in the Jam can keep an eye on the NAG website.
Training colleges
Employment in the local game development industry has grown by 5%, with the growth in its estimated value increasing 82% during 2014. This relatively small industry shows tremendous potential with sustainable career opportunities. rAge is committed to growing the industry and will have a variety of exhibitors such as colleges and training institutions from around the country that offer courses (like animation and game development) for breaking into the gaming industry.
