The Mercury reports that the Durban Investment Promotion Agency's acting head, Russell Curtis says that environmental impact assessments must still be conducted and if the relevant authorities are satisfied then the energy generation project will get underway. If it gets the go-ahead, the wave energy project will start generating electricity sometime next year. The generators are not expected to harm the sea's ecology and will have limited impact on the environment.
The project is estimated to cost in the region of R155-million to erect but ratepayers' funds will not be used as funding will be sourced from other investors, according to The Mercury report.
