In last year's award ceremony, Nigeria scooped up nine Awards in the 18 categories but the highlight of the ceremony – the Special Recognition Award – went to South Africa Kwaito singer Zola. Other recipients include Hugh Masekela, honoured in 2005 and Enoch Sontonga and Fela Kuti, who both received post humous awards in 2003.
Comments Yolisa Phahle, Channel O's GM, “This year we are taking the awards to Johannesburg's city centre and are working on making tickets available for the Channel O fans to attend and be part of this unprecedented celebration of 21st century African urban music.
“We plan to rock the city from start to finish and are in the process of booking the best live music that Africa has to offer.”
