The award is one of five over various categories given annually to individuals who make noteworthy contributions to dialogue, social cohesion and peace; Vuyo Mbuli is a previous recipient.
Garda has taken big strides in broadcasting since first cutting his teeth in community radio, followed by a period as sports anchor at 5fm and then SAfm.
According to THI executive director Aydin Ayal, "Garda has displayed an objective and constructive approach in his involvement in the media and the team deciding on the awards thought that this contributed invaluably to tolerance and understanding in society. His national radio and television platforms make him unique, as he can reach out to millions across the country."
Ayal also reflected on Garda's acceptance speech adding, "Garda emphasized that he adopts an objective position in discussions and he asks questions because he loves this country. It is of great importance to appreciate the role of the media in a country and media serving that purpose. The public expects the media to ask the questions on their behalf in a constructive manner and he surely manages to balance that.
"It was this balanced and constructive approach that made him the perfect candidate for this award. The award's aim is to draw attention to the dialogue and tolerance aspect of the work that recipients do. His work definitely has a strong aspect of building and spreading a culture of tolerance."
Garda's versatility is evident off air too, he is a corporate MC and has been a judge for The Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards, the Advantage AdMag awards and the 2012 PR industry's PRISM awards - where he will co-MC the event in Johannesburg on 25 March.
