Down by the Riverside

It was only after hearing the owls at night and the chattering monkeys the next day that we realised we were not hearing rural Hout Bay but The World of Birds, the neighbouring property to the five-acre set up that is Riverside Estates.
There's plenty of space to be alone at Riverside.

Brian's room.... well appointed and very comfortable.

Not only does the brightly painted World of Birds mural act as the easiest landmark to find the property, situated in the lush and Equestrian-Estate laden Valley Road, but it also provides the most fabulous soundtrack to a restful stay.

Try a bit of haggling - it could be worth your while.

We had an upstairs suite in Lothorian, (R1,360 low-season including breakfast) one of 16 accommodations that range from luxury (graded four star but the room qualified for five stars) to self-catering units from about half the price.

Take time for some lookies at the market opposite Snoekies...

I can see why the mink-and-manure set like Valley Road. It is far enough away from the busy areas of Hout Bay to feel rural yet a short drive to the beach or to the harbour, which has the most fabulous covered market just opposite Snoekies.

And when you reckon you want some company, the lounge beckons.

The Bay Market is one of the best reasons to be in Hout Bay and if you're there over a weekend, as we were, it is very popular. I suggest you have an early breakfast at The Riverside - really delicious buffet of the usual suspects but done extremely well and with barista-quality staff serving up Lavazza coffee, so you aren't too easily tempted by the extensive food offerings - which range from organic and health-focused to crammed carbo-calorie confectionery.

... And have a haggle or two

It is also worth taking the time to shop at the clothing and object stores at the market and the two pieces of clothing I bought have become favourite items. In true market style, there seems to be a willingness to haggle and negotiate a better price, which I really enjoyed.

The harbour is just down the way.

Try to be back at Riverside by mid-afternoon as the sun streams in through the French doors and onto a chez lounge that scores high in the retro deco stakes if not the comfort ones. Make time to spend at the large pool (there are three pools on the property) or order tea under the ample gazebo.

When you need space to think...

Consider Riverside Estates as a venue for your next conference for up to 120 people. They offer half and quarter day conference rates as well as the technology know-how to offer visual mapping tools and techniques like Participlan (and if needed skilled specialist facilitators) to assist you reaching your conference goals. They also provide break-away and "think spaces" spread throughout the property including the pretty gardens, river frontage and a deeply wooded area that wouldn't surprise one if Red Riding Hood emerged with the Huntsman!

We found the staff to be warm and helpful and wished for a longer stay.
