Cell C's Knott-Craig suffers minor stroke

Mobile carrier Cell C said its chief executive Alan Knott-Craig had suffered a minor stroke and was recovering in hospital‚ but responding well to treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Cell C's chief commercial officer‚ Jose Dos Santos will act as CEO until Knott-Craig returns to work.

In 2006 while running Vodacom‚ Knott-Craig suffered a heart attack‚ his second. Knott-Craig was the founding CEO of Vodacom‚ but retired in 2008.

Since joining Cell C in April last year‚ Knott-Craig has been on a crusade to lower prices and last year sparked a price war that has led to a reduction in retail prices by all network operators.

He has vowed to work continue his fight for lower prices from all mobile phone network operators.

Knott-Craig successfully lobbied the Independent Communications Authority of SA to reduce the mobile termination rates‚ and last month he filed a complaint with the Competition Commission‚ accusing MTN and Vodacom‚ - which between them control 90% of the mobile market - of anti-competitive behaviour.
