The Maples are Khayalakhe Skosana (21), Marvin Moane (25), Musa Mashiane (26), Phakamani Mngomezulu (22) and Tendai Dikinya (23).
"We decided to call ourselves The Maples, because Maple Syrup is sweet and the Maple tree is long-lasting and deep rooted, just as we dream to be," says Dikinya. "We want to represent Africa in the music scene, last for a very long time and be remembered."
The Maples received a one-year Universal Records deal and R150 000,cash from CAN DO! (Nampak Bevcan) to help them get started in their music careers. The group's plans with the prize money include everything from buying sound equipment and new instruments to paying off lobola.
They will also receive mentorship, guidance and support from Mafokate and CAN DO! in order to establish themselves and grow their talent and fan base.
"We want to be legendary," says Mashiane. "We can bring a new sound and maturity into South African music, which we hope will set us apart on the road to becoming the next big act that South Africa will be proud of internationally," adds Skosana.
"The Maples is a group of seasoned performers who each has a captivating presence on stage", says Mafokate, their mentor and U CAN DO IT! main judge. "There is no doubt in my mind that these musicians were born to be stars."
The show also attracted music heavyweights including Donald, Jodi Gold and Penny Thloloe who served on the finale judges' panel, while Kelly Khumalo, Chomee, Luthando Shosha, Lira, Bucie, Paledi Segapo, Jamela and Sindi Nene are among the guest judges who made appearances and shared their knowledge and experiences throughout the show. Renowned musician, Kabomo served as musical director on the spectacular final performances.
The official winning group were however not the only ones who have been given opportunities as a result of the show. Chomee, South African dancer, choreographer and musician, popularly known as the Queen of Dance was so impressed with the talent that she offered Andrea Tambo (19) the beatboxer and Pulane Mokone (20), the opportunity to work with her.
Dance music legend, Donald, also offered to continue mentoring Jesse Suntele (20), best known for his poetic rap style.
Finally Khanyisa Mbuthu (30) and Mbongeni Mavuso (26), the duo known as Iziqhaza was offered a record deal, as Mafokate committed to signing the duo to his 999 music label.
"The CAN DO! campaign is creating a movement to reach the youth through music, entertainment and popular culture by supporting up-and-coming local talent," explains Alex Bouwer, CAN DO! marketing manager. "Through the CAN DO! movement, young local artists have been identified and moulded to reach their potential and become true stars," adds Bouwer.
"We love being able to provide a platform to recognise and support South African talent who have a CAN DO! attitude and we are already looking forward to the second season in 2014," Bouwer concludes.
