MMINO MusicMix: A Boundless Experience

The soul of Southern Africa comes alive during heritage month in a massive musical explosion at MMINO MusicMix: ‘A Boundless Experience'. The two day festival, central to the Celebrate Durban activities, will feature sounds and rhythms unique to sub-Saharan Africa at the ICC Arena in Durban from 24 to 25 September 2009.

Besides a collaboration between the inimitable Johnny Clegg and the musical genius of Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi, the festival also features a diverse selection of musicians including Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Ray Phiri. In association with East Coast Radio, legendary Hugh Masekela will perform with a seven-piece choir and long time friend, ex Sankomota leader and gospel soloist, Tsepo “The Village Pope” Tshola as well as guest violinist, Tsepo Mngoma.

Some of the finest musicians from nine SADC countries (Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Angola, Mozambique, Zambia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and South Africa) in seven “Boundless” Transfrontier Park Regions and, in a real festival coup - the highly acclaimed Nomad Touareg group Etran Finatawa from Niger will collaborate with the MMINO Boundless All Star Band led by Neill Solomon to symbolically break down musical barriers and create music without frontiers.

The festival celebrates the core ethos of Boundless Southern Africa, a brand that has been adopted by nine southern African countries. Through a shared passion for Nature, Culture and Community seven unique and extraordinarily diverse transfrontier conservation areas (TFCA'S) are showcased and promoted to investors and tourists around the world.

The MMINO MusicMix festival creates an exciting opportunity to promote the musical talent and culture from these countries and TFCA's. It also marks the culmination of a four month Boundless Southern Africa Expedition, led by National Geographic explorer Kingsley Holgate whose aim is to raise awareness of the TFCA's as tourist and investment destinations. The foyer of the ICC arena will be transformed into an exhibition showcasing the nature, culture and communities the expedition encountered on their journey, which includes a talk ‘around the camp fire' with Kingsley Holgate, beautiful photographs and video footage from the expedition. This will be open and free to the public from 12:00 - 18:00 on September 24 and 25.

Free educational workshops with participating musicians will take place from 12:00 to 17:00 each day in the ICC foyer as part of the Boundless Southern Africa exhibition.

Booking for the two concerts can be made through Computicket. 083 915 8000. Booking opens on Friday, 28 August.
