#MusicExchange: Vusi Nova
Vusi Nova is currently one of the biggest artists in South African music with a plethora of awards behind his name.
He has just released his new album called Manyan–Nyan and the song of the album As’phelelanga (featuring Jessica Mbangeni) is in line to be one of the biggest songs of the summer.
I chatted to him, last week.
When are you happiest?
Honestly, it has to be when I am on the stage. Whether it’s for 10 people or 10,000 people, I am elated just performing for those who love my music.
What does music mean to you?
Everything. It’s the foundation of who Vusi Nova is. It’s something I don’t think I can live without. It’s a spiritual calling and it runs through my veins.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?
Seeing the people you make the music for singing my music back to me word for word. All the effort time and emotion that goes into making a song comes together and makes it all worth it at that point.
What drives you: ego or humility?
A little bit of both, honestly. But I would change ego for confidence ‘cause without it, I wouldn’t be able to achieve the goals I have set out for myself. Once a person is confident with themselves they can be confident in their gifts too. Humility helps me remain there and keeps me grounded.
Any funny moments on stage?
There are too many to mention. But the one that sticks out the most is when one of my band members needed to use the toilet really badly, while I was on stage and we were only halfway through the performance. He held it in like a champion though.
What is your most treasured possession?
My voice. It’s something I take with me wherever I go, It has helped me get to where I am today. I nurture it, train it, take care of it and sometimes it even surprises me.
It’s your round, what are you drinking?
Double whisky and Appletiser.
What makes you stand out?
My live performances. I have always been told that when I am on stage no matter how many times people have watched me they always feel like it was the first time watching.
If you were not a musician what would you do?
I never had a plan B.
Pick five words to describe yourself?
Committed, driven, passionate, loving, talented.
Favourite fashion garment?
Anything designed for me by David Thlale.
Give us some real proper slang and what it means?
“It’s a jump”, it means it’s really happening at a spot.
Top of your bucket list?
Go on an island holiday in the Maldives.
Your greatest achievement?
Double platinum status with my previous album.
What do you complain about most often?
Wishing to have more time on stage.
On stage, I tend to?
Be in the moment, I forget where I am ‘cause the music tends to take me somewhere else.
Wishes and dreams for 2019?
I’m looking to scoop some more awards and perform abroad more often. Take Vusi Nova to the world and to be healthy and happy.
