The Eskom eta Awards have announced that 49M, one of South Africa's biggest energy saving movements, will sponsor two categories of its awards; the Energy Savings in Households and Energy Efficiency Awareness.

The awards reward exceptional efforts by individuals, students, companies and other institutions in the efficient use of energy. The winner in each category receives a cash amount of R30 000, and R5 000 could go to each of the runners-up in each category.

The household category rewards those who have implemented creative and effective energy efficiency applications at home thereby dramatically reducing their energy consumption and costs.
The awareness category rewards those who have made a significant and visible impact in spreading the word on the importance of relieving the growing pressure on the electricity grid.

"Finding a sustainable solution"

Dr Steve Lennon, Eskom group executive for sustainability says, "This partnership is a natural collaboration for the organisation. 49M is its flagship campaign and ties in perfectly with the awards, as both are committed to finding a sustainable solution to South Africa's energy needs."

Andrew Eitzinger, 49M's spokesperson says, "It gives us great pleasure to be part of these awards this year. For the past 23 years, the awards have honoured individuals and organisations that have done sterling work in terms of energy conservation. It is such initiatives that the campaign calls for and we encourage all South Africans to support energy efficient initiatives, while they also do their bit to save the much needed energy."

"We believe it is our role to work closely with government, businesses and the public to encourage this energy saving mind-set among our population. With increased pressure on energy resources not only in South Africa but worldwide, it has never been more important to use electricity wisely," says Dr Lennon.

Entries for the awards close on Thursday 3 August and winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 15 November 2012. For more, go to www.eta-awards.co.za.
