Out In Africa Film Festival needs sponsors

The Out In Africa South African Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (OIA) has joined forces with Lunch Box Media (LBM), an advertising and marketing agency, which will be a source of much-needed funds to keep this 18-year-old institution running.

It is one of the largest film festivals in South Africa. Partnered with Nu-Metro theatres, it hosts three annual festivals screening both local and international gay and lesbian films. The organisation foresees tough times ahead as the economic downturn affects international donors and their contributions. OIA awaits the adjudication of its proposal, submitted six months ago, to National Lottery for renewed funding.

The partnership is appealing to corporates and brands to take advantage of the affordable print, branding, screen and online opportunities for high impact marketing to a captive audience and help keep this community festival alive.

8333 campaign

OIA needs a minimum of R3 million a year to achieve all the planned annual activities and instituted a 8333 campaign a few years ago. Director Nodi Murphy explains, "We began by using the simple equation of dividing R1 million by 120 (being a monthly donation of R10 for a year) and arriving at 8333. We have had a modicum of success. Now we have upped the ante and are asking for R240 a year. It really isn't a huge sum for individuals to afford."

These fans would support three mini-main Festivals in Johannesburg and Cape Town, collectively adding up to 30 features and numerous shorts over the year. In addition, there are five satellite festivals in Ermelo, Kimberley, Mafikeng, Pietermaritzburg and East London and the strong possibility of Port Elizabeth as a sixth in 2012.
