Go see Blue Man Group!
The bald, bug-eyed, blue-hued men of Blue Man Group are here. After a successful stint in Joburg for seven weeks, the end show dates were extended twice. Blue Man Group now gives Cape Town a taste of their unique entertainment with their New World Tour at GrandWest in Cape Town till 26 March.
I attended opening night and was enthralled throughout. A charming mix of performance art, concert and theatre spectacle, the Blue Man Group humorously and quite sweetly perform a mix of creative and musical skits, at points utilising members of the audience in their antics.
History and accolades
“Blue Man Group was founded by three close friends Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton in New York in 1991. Since the group’s inception it has grown to include permanent shows in Las Vegas, New York, Orlando, Boston, Chicago and Berlin, as well as a North American Tour and a World Tour. Beyond the stage show, Blue Man Group has toured the globe with the ‘Megastar World Tour’ rock concert parody, produced multiple albums, including the Grammy-nominated Audio, and the recently released THREE,” says co-founder Chris Wink.
“When we first began creating performances centred on this innocent, curious character called Blue Man, we never dreamt where he would lead us. We are so honoured to be able to share our show with the people of South Africa and beyond. We believe the Blue Man’s universal message of joyful exuberance and euphoric celebration resonates within all of us.”
Pitch perfect renditions
Throughout, the show is tied together with incredibly tight music, be it a pitch perfect rendition of Nkalakatha on a plumbing pipe constructed marimba or the addition of the lumo attired live band that never seems to miss a beat.
Drumming, paint, plumbing, mobile apps, a Twinkie dinner party and more all take place during the show which culminates in an awe-inspiring ending which will have you feeling like a kid again. Make sure not to miss this one if you can!
