Nkosi blows house away with new range
Kensani Nkosi's eagerly awaited Stoned Cherrie Love Movement collection brought the house down on Friday night at the AFI Cape Town Fashion Week.
Nkosi, who celebrated 10 years in the fashion world this year, was the only designer that got a standing ovation.
Her designs were inspired by Xhosa, Shangaan and West African influences. She used quirky, funky variations of geometric and colourful prints, shiny fabrics and lively shades with a sprinkle of beadwork here and there.
All this made her collection a fun blend of original looks, testing the boundaries and mish-mashing fabrics, patterns and colours to create her own unique creations. And her show stopper - modelled by former Miss SA Tatum Keshwar - was a pleasant surprise. The dazzling frilled garment attracted much applause.
Port's menswear collection did not disappoint. The collection warmed things up, with ladies drooling over beautifully toned male models, who showed off underwear and swimwear.
Also refreshing to see was the recently discovered Louisa Phagwala from Soweto, walking the ramp for the first time. The lanky 19-year-old student proved that local model talent was there, contrary to the belief that South African women are not good enough for the ramps.
Most designers, though, erred on the side of caution. Even well-known risk-takers such as Kluk CGDT were downright conservative.
