Clean Industry Awards program for Eastern Cape
Entry forms must be submitted by 15 December 2009 and judging will take place between January and February 2010. Judging includes a site visit and audit by professional members of IWMSA, as well as employees of the DEDEA and other government departments.
This competition is open to any size Eastern Cape organisation, which seeks to manage waste in a controlled manner, thereby minimising the environmental impacts of the activity while at the same time containing costs.
DEDEA launched and sponsored the Clean Industry Award Programme in 2007. An important outcome from the first competition was the need for specialized hazardous waste training. The IWMSA and DEDEA then hosted a specialized training session free of charge to industries to close the identified gap regarding the legislative requirements related to hazardous waste management the following year.
Deidre Nxumalo-Freeman, chair of the Eastern Cape branch indicated, "The aim of the awards programme is to promote integrated waste and environmental management in the Eastern Cape. We are challenging all the organisations to enter, as we want to set the example for the rest of South Africa and show that we are the cleanest, greenest province.
"It is important for companies to enter, because by entering the programme, organisations are able to align themselves with other businesses and factories that are striving towards integrated waste and environmental management best practices. Competitiveness generates better control and management of environmental risks. It also helps organisations to implement improvements to processes and productivity by sharing the ideas and skills generated among all of the entrants of this high profile competition."
