Oakley Pro Junior to go to Port Alfred
The 2010 edition of the Oakley Pro Junior is set to go in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape and the top junior surfers in the country will compete in the World Pro Junior Grade 2 event, which has an R18 500 first prize for the boys' and R7500 first prize for the girls' division. The event will take place between 30 April and 2 May, 2010.
The Oakley Pro Junior is part of a worldwide series that culminates with the Oakley World Pro Junior in Bali in October. These events are part of the qualifying series to find the top junior surfers in the world for the Bali tournament, and include Oakley Pro Junior contests in Australia, France, Japan, Brazil and North America.
The South African junior surfers have been in serious training over the last few months and have been competing regularly. By the time they arrive in Port Alfred there will be some clarity as to who the top junior performers are in their respective divisions in the country. Then it will be down to the serious business of competing for first-place honours amongst the waves of Port Alfred.
The best junior surfing ever
Oakley South Africa team manager Greg Emslie is excited about the event and for the surfing that is going to come."I am really looking forward to the Oakley Pro Junior getting underway next week," said Emslie. "Last year the waves and the surfing were top notch. This year we still have most of the juniors that were in the event last year, including the finalists Shaun Joubert and Brendon Gibbons."
Emslie has also been monitoring the conditions for the week ahead."Together with a few years' experience that these surfers have gained, there are great sandbanks and a spring low tide next weekend at East Beach. We should see the best junior surfing ever in South Africa."
