The four-day, 569km cycle from Joburg to Durban, which takes place from the 24 to 28 June, 2012, will have 22 King David High School pupils from King David Linksfield and King David Victory Park between grade eight and 11, two pupils from the Diepsloot Development Cycling team and eight parents of pupils taking part in the cycle.
The Diepsploot Development team once again joins this year's cycle. The team from Diepsloot, which has in previous years produced the SA U-18 mountain biking champion and some of the top seeded cyclists in the country, will mentor the King David cyclists in preparation for the tour and will also motivate the young riders and helping them through some of the toughest stages of the event.
The cycle will begin at the Vaal and on the first day will cover 156km, crossing the Vaal River, moving from Gauteng into the Free State. Day two of the cycle will have the team covering 105km between Bassfeather and Hlalanathi into the northern Drakensburg. On the third day, the cyclists will meander from Bergville to Howick on a lengthy 148km stretch. The fourth and final day has the team setting off from Lions River and covering 100km, passing Hillcrest and then finally heading into Umhlanga in Durban.
The group of riders will be cycling in four groups according to their cycling paces and each group will be accompanied and supervised by an adult and a following vehicle.
Paramount safety precautions have been taken on the cycle and each rider will be supplied with a route map and detailed descriptions of where all the stops are on the route. There will be following vehicles and a bus accompanying the team and each vehicle will be equipped with a bike rack, wheel spares, two-way radios so that they can collect tired riders, fix punctures and communicate between the cars. There will also be medical services.
