Titans, Diamond Eagles in two-horse race
The Nashua Titans and the Gestetner Diamond Eagles virtually turned the SuperSport Series into a two-horse race when they both scored comfortable victories in their sixth round matches on Sunday.
The Titans beat the Nashua Dolphins by a massive 220 runs at Willowmoore Park shortly after lunch with Albie Morkel recording his first five-wicket haul for some time and Imran Tahir supporting him with eight wickets in the match. The man of the match award went to Blake Snijman for his maiden SuperSport Series century in the second innings.
The Diamond Eagles, after trailing on the first innings, beat the Nashua Cape Cobras at Sahara Park Newlands by 80 runs with Charl Pietersen taking four wickets in an innings for the second time in the match. The man of the match award went to 19-year-old Reeza Hendricks who scored his maiden first-class century to turn the game around for his side and went on to finish unbeaten on 151 (364 balls, 13 fours).
The Titans now top the log on 72 points followed by the Diamond Eagles on 67. These two sides have three outright wins each while no other side has more than one following the rearguard action of the Chevrolet Warriors to hold the bizhub Highveld Lions to a draw in the day's other match at Sahara Oval St. George's.
There are only four rounds left and any team wishing to challenge the top two will need at least three outright victories in the remaining fixtures.
The Diamond Eagles are at home to the Nashua Titans in the penultimate round at the end of March and that match may well decide the title race.
