Springbok Sevens team off to a flying start

Second seeds South Africa made a flying start to their attempt to claim a third IRB Sevens Series title in Dubai with a 31-10 victory over Scotland on Friday morning.

Paul Treu's new-look team scored four first-half tries to lead 24-0, allowing the coach the opportunity to blood squad newcomer Kyle Brown in the final stages.

Tries in the first two minutes by Marius Schoeman - who injured a wrist in the act of scoring - and Sevens player of the year Renfred Dazel put the Springboks firmly in charge.

Ryno Benjamin followed up with back-to-back tries to put the game beyond doubt by the break. Scotland rallied in the second half with tries by Andrew Easson and Ashleah McCulloch but the Springboks scored their fifth when newly-crowned Sasol Young Player of the Year Robert Ebersohn out-paced the defence on the outside to touch down.

South Africa play their second match against the Arabian Gulf at 13h10 (SA time) on Friday. Live scoring of the match will be carried on www.sarugby.co.za
