New Gavin Rajah collection unveiled tomorrow

Gavin Rajah will showcase his Spring/Summer 2012 collection tomorrow, at the Ballroom at the CTICC. Rajah revisits his origins and returns to the vibrant capital of Rajasthan: Jaipur and the collection is a statement of Rajah's heritage, irreverent use of colour, pattern and unique silhouette.

The colourful glories of a camel fair in Pushkar, the fragrant scent of lotus flowers and the bright moon over the Rambagh Palace are all an inspiration to what's expected. Fine fabrics meet exceptional craftsmanship to create a collection that abounds in luxurious detail. Whilst the collection is not derivative of traditional dress in an obvious manner, Rajah infuses bold colour, texture, intricate embellishment and a heady sensuality to his varied dress silhouettes - stirred by the nomadic tribes and the remnants of a colonial era long gone by.

Real-time, live streaming video

Those at home are also privy to the unveiling with real-time, live streaming video to the Gavin Rajah Facebook page.

In keeping with his attention to detail and constant strive for perfection, this season's show is held in collaboration with leading specialists, carefully selected by Rajah himself. Fans will be spoilt with Lindt chocolate creations prepared by the master chocolatier, Dimo Simapos and Tanqueray cocktails crafted by Thirst Bar Services. The air will be scented by Jo Malone.

Gavin Rajah is extending his brand into a homeware collection in association with Hertex fabrics and guests will get a sneak peek of things to come, with a new store opening in Cape Town's De Waterkant area.

The collection

The Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a bold statement of colour and shapes. Dresses range from form-fitting sheaths that skim the body to relaxed silhouettes that blouson in luxurious fabrics. A strong emphasis on separates makes the collection a ubiquitous addition to a woman's wardrobe for the next season.

Intricate beading and metal embroidery techniques indigenous to Rajasthan, Zardosi and Zari, have been used in a contemporary way by adding an ultra luxurious feel to the collection. This season also has the launch of a carefully designed and curated range of hand-crafted shoes under the Pret a Vivre label. This collection, specially designed for Rajah's 2012 collection, ranges from beautifully embellished sandals for high summer to fashion-forward high heels.

Collection of couture gowns

The collection is divided into two segments, the first being the launch of Rajah's Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection (Pret A Vivre) and the second his collection of couture gowns. Pristine evening jackets, Maharajah redingotes, jodphurs, delicate silk floral dresses and gowns in clouds of silk/cotton tulle abound in the collection. This season, Rajah has collaborated with Akshar Choudree to create a modern take on Indian jewels reminiscent of the Maharajah of Patiala's obsession with fine jewellery. Laser-cut lace, trapunto detailing, metallic leather and brocades are integral to the collection.
