Getaway International becomes biannual

Following the successful sales of Getaway International, launched as an annual in September 2011, the magazine will now have two editions a year, with the next issue hitting the streets in April 2012.

The first issue sold 11 000 copies from a newsstand print run of 15 000, exceeding expectations and confirming there is a market for locally generated content written specifically for South Africans travelling overseas, said publisher Jacqueline Lahoud.

Additional distribution was secured through delivery to Compleat Golfer subscribers, taking the total distribution to more than 15 000 copies for the launch issue.

"Readers were really happy with the approach and content," commented the editor, Justin Fox. "Feedback was that Southern Africa and nearby islands are well covered and that the international edition should focus on destinations beyond our shores. We have taken that to heart and adjusted our editorial line-up accordingly."

Rather than simply serving as a guide to the top tourist destinations, it aims to appeal to a broad range of reader interests. Features often have a quirky, fun perspective on things to see and do on the five continents.

Winter edition

The upcoming winter edition remains true to that style, with an eye on the London Olympics later this year, the lead story looking at enjoyable, offbeat things to do when attending the Games, while Tintin in Brussels explores the Belgian capital by following the footsteps of this lovable cartoon character.

The food and architecture of Morocco, the attractions of the Australian west coast, 48 hours in Hong Kong, volunteering in Mauritius, Thai street food and touring Turkey are among the other editorial highlights.

The print order for the upcoming edition will remain at 25 000, with guaranteed distribution to 8 000 suitable subscribers. The issue will sell for R39.95, with a shelf life of three months.
