Rugby magazine to launch for university audience

A free rugby magazine, Varsity Play, launches 30 January 2012 for 18-23 year old student readers at 13 South African universities. It will be distributed on-campus by the company's uniformed teams on Mondays, to fans attending selected university matches and distributed to university rugby club's members.

The 68-page magazine is dedicated to varsity rugby, including local and international commentary from rugby legends, a monthly column from Jake White and reviews from South Africa's best rugby writers.

It will bring regular round-ups of the weekly rugby games and tournaments, player profiles, action posters, a Varsity Angel double page shoot and fashion, grooming and must-have features for this socially driven university game.

"Important part of SA rugby"

"University rugby is an important part of South African rugby. It has provided another platform into professional rugby and is great for late developers, who may otherwise have gone unnoticed. I am excited about giving my thoughts on the rising talents coming through the ranks, as well as views on hurdles that face our student players and developments in the global game," says columnist and Rugby World Cup 2007 winning coach, White.

"As a team, we are thrilled to bring a premium-designed, content-rich magazine tailored specifically for this audience," says creative director Rory Ross. "With thousands of students attending weekly rugby matches around the country and the FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International, becoming the must-watch South African rugby tournament behind Currie Cup and Super Rugby, creating visual heroes of these rising stars and producing dedicated content for this market is essential."
