Police medical scheme introduces new mobi technology
The South African Police Service Medical Scheme, POLMED, has introduced a first in mobile phone technology for the healthcare sector. Members can now view their latest claims and contributions through a monthly WAP SMS, with the added benefit of being available 24 hours a day.
This technology enables members to access their statements, benefits and contributions, search for a general practitioner in their area, access the customer online facility and view all of the other useful information that they can access on the official POLMED website, simply by using their cell phone.
A recent mobile online survey conducted amongst a pilot group of POLMED cell phone users confirmed that POLMED members welcomed the opportunity to be able to access claims and contributions statements via their cell phones. These members also regarded the mobile statements facility as a useful way to stay updated.
An opportunity to reach a wider audience
"Research has indicated that mobile internet users far exceed the amount of personal computers (PC) users in South Africa. This was an opportunity for us to reach a maximum audience as many of our members do not have direct access to a PC," said Mbasa Mxenge, principal officer of POLMED.
"We realize that POLMED members are often outside of the office patrolling our communities, and as a result don't always have access to e-mail. Now, as opposed to phoning in to the call centre, members can check their statements on their mobile phones. This is a much cheaper, more convenient option for both the scheme and member."
