Miner makes major win
The winner, Madevu Kwenene, had his life transformed in an instant! He won R100 000 in a fixed deposit account, plus an additional R20 000 to be donated to a school of his choice on his behalf. The semi-finalists each received R2 500 and a hamper as consolation prizes.
Mark Williams, CEO of Teba Bank, handed over the prize to the stunned Kwenene. “I never imagined that this was possible when I first walked into the Teba Bank branch to place my savings on fixed deposit,” said Kwenene.
He is a migrant worker working at Western Deep Levels on Tautona Gold Mine and hails from Ngqongweni Administrative Area, in Ngqeleni, near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, where his family still resides.
“This has changed my life and I will now have to change my way of thinking”. He never believed he would be able to give his children a good education and can reconsider their future. But now he can – and he also plans to use some of his money to fix his homestead.
Teba Bank will also facilitate the provision of a financial literacy/education seminar to Kwenene and members of his community to ensure that they are empowered to manage their finances appropriately.
Following the overwhelming response to the Win a Dream Competition, the bank will be launching their Pasela ya Paseka campaign for mineworkers, with a prize of R50 000 worth of furniture and appliances, on the 25 February, 2008.
