Income for food, beverages down
The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for October 2009 decreased by 0.9% compared with October 2008, the Pretoria-based agency said.
The decrease was mainly due to a decrease in income from food sales (-0.9% and contributing -0.8 of a percentage point).
The main contributors to the decrease of 0.9% were restaurants and coffee shops (-3.6 percent and contributing -2.0 percentage points) and other catering services (-22.8% and contributing -1.1 percentage points).
However, these decreases were partly counteracted by an increase in income for takeaway and fast-food outlets (10.4% and contributing 2.3 percentage points), Statistics SA said.
